All Native Americans Are Savages

Native Americans or Indians are always pictured as warriors or hunters in many movies and cartoons.  They are also stereotyped as a savage race by media.

While, on the old time, warfare and conflict did exist among Native Americans, the majority of tribes were peaceful and only attacked in self-defense. Moreover, while meat was certainly a staple for most Native American communities, many also cultivated a wide variety of crops. Beside all of those, Native Americans are pictured as nature lovers too.

In my opinion, I think that all the stereotypes of Native American are not valid in this 21st century. Native Americans are just like the other human races now. In addition, I don’t think that they were savages. They acted like that because they were forced to move from their original territory. Some people wanted to take Native Americans’ land.

White People Are All Racist

Some say that the sins of the past will haunt the present and this is certainly true with this stereotype. Since Columbus stepped on the land of America, this stereotype has already started. First of all, the whites had some problems with the Native American or Indian. Even, before coming in America, the whites used slave to paddle their ship to the America. After that, the whites continued to have problems about racist with the African American and Mexican.

However, in my opinion, I think that this stereotype is not valid today. There might be some white people who are racist, but not all of them are racist. In fact, white people now have accept to live together and equally with Native Americans, African Americans, and Mexican Americans in this United States of America.

All Asian Are Geniuses and Chinese

Every Asian child that goes in the United States school is considered to be geniuses and Chinese by many Americans. Moreover, the media also supports this stereotype. For example, in most American movies or films, the doctor or scientist is usually portrayed to be an Asian.

In my opinion, those Americans forget that Asia is a really big continent. In fact, there are seven big regions and more than fifty countries in Asia.

In addition, there are more Asian geniuses that actually come from India and
Iran. According to The Times of India, as many as 36% of Indians work in NASA and 38% of doctors in United States are Indians. There are also 43% of Iranians in NASA.

Sometimes, it is not good to be an Asian student who comes from China or look like a Chinese, from American point of view, since the math or science teachers can expect him or her to be great at theirs subjects.

All African Americans Are Good at Basketball

“What do you call a bunch of white people sitting on the bench? The NBA!” That is just one of the jokes about how good the African American plays basketball. Although it is true that seventy eight percent of all NBA player in 2012 are all people of color, that does not mean that all of African American are good at basketball. It just happens that most of them are born with stronger body and many use it to take advantage in playing sports.

In my opinion, this kind of stereotype is a good stereotype.  Not only it will boost the social status of African American, but also it will make other people from different races, who are considered to be not as good as African American at basketball, to be a dark horse. People will be surprised how good they can be and that situation will only make the dark horse become more famous. For example, the Jeremy Lin “Linsanity” fever.

Hispanics Are All Illegal Aliens

Although the fact that fifty-eight percent of the illegal immigrant population is from Mexico, it does not mean that all of the Hispanics in United States are aliens. It is also stated in CNN.com“In 2010, about 1.04 million people received legal permanent resident status. Of those, 139,120 were born in Mexico, 70,863 were born in China, and 58,173 were born in the Philippines”. This is the proof that some of them are legal residents.

I feel sorry for this stereotype, since some Hispanics really try their best to be legal residents and seek brighter future in United States. However, some people still see them as “law breakers” (illegal immigrants). Thus, this is just a stereotype.
